What We Do
Our Mission
American DanceWheels brings wheelchair ballroom dancing to the disabled community. Unlike other recreational programs for the disabled, like tennis, basketball, or hand-cycling, wheelchair dancing integrates disabled and able-bodied individuals in competitive venues as well as general recreation. Wheelchair dancers can learn to dance socially or competitively in highly creative and professional settings along with their able-bodied partners. This activity crosses the boundaries of age, gender, and physical ability and includes individuals using manual or power chairs with varying levels of ability. Dance centers will offer a wide variety of dance lessons, including Latin, Smooth, and Club dancing.
American DanceWheels has created the first American style syllabus for wheelchair dancing. Able-bodied dance studios and rehabilitation centers are interested in using this syllabus in their institutions. Seminars for professional dance teachers and therapists are being held so that this method of wheelchair dancing can be taught to wheelchair users in their communities.
The American Style Wheelchair Dance Syllabus will be available in book form. Other print materials will be available as well as video instruction. We will continue to promote wheelchair dancing through education and performance.
Wheelchair Dancesport has recently been recognized as an international Paralympic Sport by the International Paralympic Committee and is being considered for the 2008 Olympic Games in the United States. American DanceWheels will continue to be at the forefront of wheelchair dancing and will be represented at this and other venues.
