About The Dewberry Tales

The Dewberry Tales is a groundbreaking stage show that celebrates the tribulations, triumphs, and talents of individuals who reveal the power of creativity, courage, authenticity, joy and connection. Through powerful vignettes filled with meaningful monologues and innovative dance choreography, we show that every person has a superpower. Ours is a show that moves hearts, opens minds, and brings audiences to their feet.

Behind the Name

While searching for a metaphor that illustrates human connection, the author of The Dewberry Tales came across the dewberry plant- a trailing, tangled, thorny vine that grows along the ground in wild parts of New England. What is fascinating about dewberry plants is that they appear to be separate plants that have grown together in a hopelessly tangled mass. But deep down in their root structure they are really all connected, dependent on each other to grow and stay healthy.

For centuries the natives who lived in that region ate dewberries as a main source of food. But when the first colonists from Europe came to the area, they rejected the dewberry plant because of its unattractive appearance. Instead, they decided to plant their own seeds from home, the ones they knew and trusted. Their harvest failed again and again, and they were forced to turn to the dewberry plant for sustenance. They learned to trust the nutritious and sweet tasting dewberries, and even discovered that the berries had the extraordinary power to heal. Like the dewberry plant, human beings have unusual powers and hidden potential that we may not see at first glance. But if we give ourselves time to get to know a person, we learn how every human being impacts us and how we are all intertwined by our shared experiences and connected through our humanity.

Why the Show Matters

The Dewberry Tales exposes humanity’s greatest weakness, fear, and our greatest strength, human connection. Today’s world uses a system to cover our fear that is rooted in the methodology of care. A process that we have adopted using guilt, charity and the desire to look compassionate as a cover up for our desire to care from a distance. Away to avoid the things we do not want to see or imagine ourselves experiencing, and a way to avoid true human connection. A system designed to arrange human beings by age, income, ability, religion, race, or circumstance cannot care about human connection. In separating people into identities rather than recognizing our shared humanity, we must ask: are we divided by our circumstances, or by the way we choose to respond to them? Are we the dividers? Or can we choose to adopt a system that supports the morals and values that live outside of the construct we now live by.

The Dewberry Tales presents a different way forward, one rooted in truth and connection. The show’s storyline lays the foundation for a better world, a world where humanity’s greatest capacity for change lies in what is already built into us, our resilience, courage, creativity, and our shared humanity. A world shaped not by division, but by connection. This is The Dewberry Tales.
